Manchester United appoints Michael Carrick as interim head coach until 2026, tasking him with reversing a season of decline and stabilising the club ahead of the Manchester derby.

Manchester United has moved quickly to appoint Michael Carrick as interim head coach until the end of the 2025/26 season, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The club indicated that paperwork is expected to be finalised soon, with Carrick’s first match in charge set for Saturday’s Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Carrick is assembling a familiar backroom team, with reports suggesting former England assistant Steve Holland will be his assistant, alongside Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, and Jonny Evans. He previously served briefly as a caretaker manager in 2021, and now, amid mounting pressure, returns to help reverse a decline that has left United 7th in the Premier League and recently eliminated from domestic cup competitions.

This new appointment presents immediate challenges. United’s current league position is seventh, and their recent cup exits add pressure on Carrick to rebuild confidence and restore tactical discipline within the squad. Reports from industry insiders suggest that Carrick has already identified key recruitment priorities, mentioning that he would “ideally like to bring in two new players: a defender and a midfielder.” The targeted positions aim to strengthen a leaky backline and bolster a possession-based midfield, with the possibility of making signings during the winter transfer window, which remains open until early February.

Carrick’s first test in this interim role will be the Manchester derby against City at Old Trafford, a crucial opportunity to stabilise a fractured dressing room and demonstrate his ability to lead. The club’s decision not to reappoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is noted in some reports, with a focus on entrusting Carrick to guide United back toward Champions League qualification and rebuild their season.

Much depends on results and potential signings in the coming weeks. While some see Carrick’s return as a practical measure to buy time and restore familiarity, others caution that deeper issues within the club require more than short-term fixes. The upcoming transfer window and the outcome of the derby will be pivotal in shaping the club’s trajectory.
