Marathon Distance Conquered with Epic Mountain Trek in the Cairngorms

A remarkable feat of endurance unfolded in the Scottish Cairngorms this weekend, as Kevin Derby completed the equivalent of the Virtual London Marathon, not on his local streets in Box Wiltshire, but across rugged mountain terrain shaped by nature at its most unforgiving and beautiful.

Travelling to take on the challenge, Kevin Derby set off from the picturesque village of Braemar with a clear goal: to do a marathon with a difference. What followed was no ordinary outing. Facing uneven trails, remote landscapes, and relentless elevation gain, he tackled a demanding 26.3-mile hike, slightly beyond the traditional marathon distance through one of the Scotlands most dramatic natural environments.

Originally intended as a run, the challenge evolved into something altogether different after an ankle injury hampered his preparation. Rather than abandon the idea, Kevin adapted, turning the effort into a gruelling hike that demanded resilience, careful pacing, and mental strength as much as physical endurance. The change in approach only added to the scale of the achievement.

From the outset, the Cairngorms revealed their wild character. Snow still clung stubbornly to higher ground, dusting the peaks and ridgelines in white despite the advancing season. As he climbed higher, the contrast between the crisp blue skies and the snow-topped summits created a striking backdrop, reinforcing both the beauty and isolation of the terrain. Underfoot, paths shifted from firm tracks to loose rock and boggy stretches, each mile presenting a new challenge.

The journey reached its peak atop Ben Avon, one of Scotland’s iconic Munros, rising to around 1,171 metres (3,841 feet). From the summit, vast panoramic views stretched across the Cairngorms, where rolling plateaus met jagged peaks and distant glens. Reacting at the Peak Kevin said “this has been one of the best experiences l have had and to manage to share the moment with friends in such an amazing place with lots of funny moments to keep my spirits up”. For Kevin, this moment marked the half way point of the challenge with more surprises ahead on a different route of descent.

Along the way, the Cairngorms offered more than just demanding terrain. The route was alive with wildlife, adding an extra layer of reward to the already unforgettable experience. Red deer could be spotted moving across the hillsides, while birds of prey circled high above, riding the thermals. However, one encounter stood out above all others the elusive Rock Ptarmigan.

Perfectly adapted to its environment, the Rock Ptarmigan is notoriously difficult to spot, its plumage blending seamlessly with the rocky, snow-flecked ground. Catching sight of one is often considered a rare privilege, even for seasoned hikers. The moment of spotting this well-camouflaged bird became a highlight of the entire journey, a brief but powerful reminder of the unique ecosystem thriving in these remote mountains.

Despite the isolation of the route, Kevin’s effort was far from a solitary one in spirit. Throughout the challenge, he drew strength from the encouragement of close friends Jason, Addy, and Ben. Their support, whether through messages or shared determination (and friendly banter), provided a vital boost during the most demanding stretches, helping him push through fatigue and maintain focus.

Described by those close to him as “gruelling but inspiring,” the achievement speaks not only to physical stamina but also to adaptability and mindset. Taking on a marathon-distance route is a significant challenge in itself; doing so across mountainous terrain, while managing injury and unpredictable conditions, elevates it to another level entirely. Speaking after he finished Kevin wanted to say “I’ve enjoyed visiting this incredible place and would recommend it to anyone especially if you are looking for untouched wilderness and l can’t wait to come back’.

While the total funds raised may be modest, the meaning behind every step and every contribution is profound. Having witnessed the impact of cancer on loved ones, and faced personal uncertainty earlier this year, this journey has been about far more than the finish line. It represents resilience, remembrance, and a commitment to making a difference, however small it may seem. “This was never just about completing a marathon, it was about turning difficult experiences into something positive, about honouring those we’ve lost, and supporting those still fighting. Every contribution, no matter the size, carries hope. I’m incredibly grateful to have been able to play even a small part in supporting Cancer Research UK and the fact my closest friends were alongside me every step of the way made it that extra bit more special.
