The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain affecting 23 regions across the UK, prompting safety alerts and travel disruptions as widespread showers threaten to cause flooding and transportation problems.
Heavy showers are forecast to move in from the south. The warning highlights the potential for surface water flooding and travel disruptions, prompting residents and commuters to stay vigilant. Coverage includes areas in South West England, London and the South East, parts of Wales, and the West Midlands, according to official reports.
These warnings mainly apply to Thursday, February 5, with some alerts starting early in the morning and continuing through the evening. Meteorologists project widespread rainfall amounts of 10–20mm, with some locations potentially experiencing over 30mm of rain by day’s end. In Scotland, rain is expected to arrive later on Wednesday and persist into Thursday morning, with warnings in effect from 6pm Wednesday, February 4, to 12pm Thursday, February 5. Across Scotland, rainfall is forecast to be between 15–30mm widely, with some areas possibly receiving 30–40mm, and in some places, totals could be even higher.
Forecasters warn that the wet conditions may cause difficult driving due to standing water, flowing water, and spray on roads. Disruptions to public transport, such as delays or cancellations on train and bus services, are also possible. The saturated ground increases the risk of flooding at lower levels during heavy rainfall.
Additionally, melting snow in parts of Scotland may contribute to surface water runoff, especially where snow is present. Snow at higher elevations above approximately 300 to 400 metres could also turn to rain, compounding the challenge for local authorities managing flood risks.
