HEARTBREAKING footage has captured the moment a male Burchell’s zebra tried to wake up his dead pregnant female.

The tear-jerking video shows the male zebra nudge his partner in the head, and when she doesn’t wake up he starts to use his mouth to try and rouse her.

The zebra uses his teeth to pull at the cheek and head of the dead female in a final futile attempt to revive her.

The female zebra had died due to complications during child birth in Etosha National Park, Namibia.

The clip was shot by biologist, naturalist and geographer Christophe Courteau.

Burchell’s zebra is a southern subspecies of the plains zebra. It is named after the British explorer and naturalist William John Burchell.

Burchell’s zebra is the only subspecies of zebra which may be legally farmed for human consumption in the UK.
