NEWRY, UK: HOW many cows can you fit in a car? It may sound like the beginning of a bad joke but this was the situation one motorist was faced with as he drove through a British city centre.

Incredible video and pictures show at least three calves peer out the rear window of a Toyota Land Cruiser during rush hour traffic.

The calves seem to be enjoying the whole experience in the car, not known for its ability to transport cattle, as they gaze out at shocked commuters.

The unusual sight was captured on camera in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland by bemused haulier Tony Shields (35) from Cullyhanna, County Armagh.

“I’ve never seen this myself, well definitely not in the last 25 years or so anyhow,” he said.

“It’s definitely not very 21st century, is it? We can see at least three young dropped calves in the back of a Land Cruiser.

“Calves that are sold at a young age like this are said to be ‘dropped calves’, as in, dropped from the or mother. All calves have double eartags.”

Although it wasn’t an everyday occurrence Mr Shield wasn’t shocked by the presence of the calves in the back of the car. He only documented it to show his son.

“I just thought it was very unusual. I took the video to send to my wife so that she could show it to my young son,” he explained. “He’s interested in cattle.

“People are amazed and giggle as it’s not commonly seen but what’s wrong with it really?

“The Land Cruiser just might need cleaned out afterwards, that’s all.”
